May is a special time for  NEA-Salina! During the month of April and May we start our pre-enrollment process, which means non-members are invited to join NEA-Salina for the 2018-2019 school year.

Now is the perfect time to plant the idea of membership in a colleague who is a non-member. Membership is essential to the security and future growth of our profession!

To highlight just a few areas of what  NEA-Salina does when planting the seed of membership
with non-members:
-We provide a voice and advocate for all our students.
-We support our fellow educators to assist them as they grow professionally.
-The more voices we have in unison, the louder we are heard.

Please send completed membership forms to Michele Palmgren at Salina South High School.

NEA-Salina Scholarships Awarded
Each year the members of NEA-Salina in partnership with the Salina Education Foundation award one elementary educator and one secondary educator with a $500 scholarship for advancement in a master’s or doctorate degree in the field of education.
The NEA-Salina Scholarship Committee receives and reviews all scholarship applications from the Salina Education Foundation. The scholarship committee then sends all applications with names removed to each NEA-Salina Officer for individual rankings. Finally the scholarship committee reviews all scores and determines the winners.  A huge thank you goes out to Katrina Paradis for her hard work this year.

The 2017-2018 NEA-Salina Elementary Scholarship recipient is Kelley VanDeCreek an elementary special education teacher at Solomon Public Schools which is serviced by the Central Kansas Cooperative in Education which is hosted by USD 305.

Kelley is a 17 year dedicated educator serving the students of Solomon Elementary, Kelley stated, “I feel strongly that as a teacher and a mother, I have an obligation to my students, school, and family to continually improve myself.”
Kelley will continue her education in a Masters of Science in School Leadership. Kelley has a strong passion for developing professional educators for students through mentoring all educators.

The NEA-Salina 2017-2018  Secondary Scholarship is awarded to Tina Donnelly.

Tina Donnelly is a Salina South High School Special Education Teacher, is currently continuing her education for a second masters in counseling at Fort Hays State University.
Tina Donnelly stated that “these classes will help me to better understand the challenges students face and how to counsel them through these difficulties. I will have the skills to better help students who are being bullied at school and online and help students who may be doing the bullying.”

NEA-Salina at the Capitol

Thirteen educators and members of NEA-Salina participated in the Annual KNEA Representative Assembly (members are the owners and have a voice in their Association).
This year action was required by educators in attendance at the Kansas State House to encourage members of the Kansas Senate to pass a school funding plan that will help get Kansas closer to meeting the needs of all students.
While it took till 1 a.m. for a funding bill to pass, Kansas educators and members of NEA-Salina stuck it out till the bitter end of the voting.

NEA-Salina only exist because of our members, and when you become a member you become an owner. Consider becoming member during our early enrollment period.

In addition also consider joining our political action, $2 a month goes a LONG ways to supporting education friendly candidates in Topeka!
